The numerals are the trick. Every one of them is inverted, which reads as wrong before you have worked out why, and that small disorientation is what gives the dial its atmosphere. Triangle markers hold the quarters, baton markers fill the rest, and sword hands and a thin seconds hand keep the time perfectly readable despite it all.
