Mizuhiki Japanese Watch Face

Mizuhiki are the fine paper cords tied on Japanese gift envelopes — knotted by hand, once, for an occasion that only happens once. This watch face lays them across an ivory silk dial, with an origami crane folded from the same cord and an awaji knot drawn tight around an opening in the plate.

⚙️ A WINDOW ONTO THE MOVEMENT
The knot at the lower left is tied around a hole cut clean through the dial. Underneath it a mechanical movement runs: two wheels turning at their own speeds, a ruby jewel at the centre, bridges and screws catching the light. The cord passes back over the opening, so you are looking past it into the watch.
